To understand the Spyker C8 Laviolette is to first understand the remarkable story of the marque that created it. The Spyker name traces its origins to 1880, when brothers Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker established their company in Hilversum, Netherlands, initially as builders of horse-drawn carriages, crafting among their earliest commissions a specially appointed Golden Coach for the Dutch Royal Family. By 1898 they had quickly made their foray into the nascent automobile industry, and within five years produced one of the most technically audacious cars of the era: the 1903 Spyker 60 HP, the world's first automobile to feature a six-cylinder engine paired with four-wheel drive and brakes on all four wheels.
When the First World War arrived, Spyker pivoted to the skies, manufacturing aircraft engines and fighter planes, forging an identity inextricably linked to aviation and adopting their legendary Latin motto: Nulla tenaci invia est via, for the tenacious, no road is impassable. In the wake of the First World War, the original Spyker company ceased operations in the 1920s, but its spirit proved inextinguishable. In 1999, Dutch entrepreneur Victor Muller and designer Maarten de Bruijn acquired the rights to the Spyker name and set about reviving the marque with a singular vision: to build a hand-crafted supercar honoring the brand's heritage of innovation, aviation artistry, and bespoke craftsmanship.
The result was the C8, a mid-engined sports car of breathtaking visual drama that debuted at the 2000 Birmingham Motor Show as the open-top C8 Spyder, followed one year later by the fixed-roof Laviolette, named in honor of Joseph Valentin Laviolette, the Belgian engineer who had helped develop Spyker's racing cars in the early 1900s. The Laviolette's fixed glass canopy, a sweeping jet-fighter-like roof structure with an integrated functional air intake, transformed the C8's already arresting silhouette into something born simultaneously of the racetrack and the aerodrome. Every surface speaks to Spyker's aviation obsession: NACA-ducted bodywork, hand-riveted aluminum panels, Aeroblade wheels evoking vintage aircraft undercarriages, and a propeller-motif steering wheel. The cockpit interior is nothing short of extraordinary, with an engine-turned aluminum dashboard populated with toggle switches lifted from vintage fighter planes, quilted leather upholstery, and polished brass accents throughout.
Powering the Laviolette is Audi's naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8, producing 400 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed Getrag manual transmission. The choice to source drivetrain components from Audi was deliberate, providing the mechanical confidence necessary to let the Laviolette's extraordinary character take center stage.
