To understand the Spyker C8 Laviolette is to first understand the remarkable story of the marque that created it. The Spyker name traces its origins to 1880, when brothers Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker established their company in Hilversum, Netherlands, initially as builders of horse-drawn carriages, crafting among their earliest commissions a specially appointed Golden Coach for the Dutch Royal Family. By 1898 they had quickly made their foray into the nascent automobile industry, and within five years produced one of the most technically audacious cars of the era: the 1903 Spyker 60 HP, the world's first automobile to feature a six-cylinder engine paired with four-wheel drive and brakes on all four wheels.

When the First World War arrived, Spyker pivoted to the skies, manufacturing aircraft engines and fighter planes, forging an identity inextricably linked to aviation and adopting their legendary Latin motto: Nulla tenaci invia est via, for the tenacious, no road is impassable.
